Retirement Planning

The Index

As many of us do this time of year, I'm cleaning house. I thought that a good thing to do in my first column of 2008 would be to organize the past two years of Retirement Planning columns in a useful way. After reviewing the questions that readers post each week in the comments section, I know that many answers can be found in a previous column.

Pick an old favorite or a topic that you wish to learn more about from the list below and -- as my mother used to say at the end of one of her favorite recipes -- "Enjoy!"

Best Date to Retire

Deciding to Retire

Things to Do to Get Ready

Sick Leave/Annual Leave

Service Credit Issues

Survivor Benefits

Law Enforcement and Special Groups

Eligibility and Computation of CSRS and FERS

Other CSRS and FERS Retirement Issues

Post-Retirement

Health Insurance

Medicare

Life Insurance

Long-Term Care

Social Security

Thrift Savings Plan

Cost of Living Adjustments

Pension Protection Act and Taxes

What would you like to learn about in 2008? If there is a topic related to retirement planning that you want me to write about (or write more about, or write about in a different way), let me know in the comments section -- I'm all ears.

  • I attended a pre-retirement class at USDA last week. The facilitator indicated that there is cause for concern regarding treatment of health insurance benefits if you do not elect to have Medicare Part B. He stated that Blue Cross-Blue Shield currently reduces the allowable amount payable and other carriers may follow suit. Did I misunderstand?
  • I'm a csrs person with 39+ years of gov't service and plan on retiring 1/2009. My wife and I are both or will be 66 in July 2008 and oct 2008 respectively. We are both on Medicare part "A" and will be taking up Part "B" when I retire in Jan 2009. I plan on taking my FEHB (Connecticare HBO) with us when I retire. I also am a retired Air Force Officer collecting retirement pay. This allows me to have Tricare Standard. So I have a mix of options and don't know what to do. I want,as do all, the best coverage I can get witrh out going broke in the endeavor. I don't want to retire and sign all the forms and have somneone say a year later "you should have done this" and it's now to late. Will I need Medicare Part "D"?? Is my carry over FEHBP considered my Medicare Supplemental Insurance?? So I'm in a mix of insurance options and need help deciding. MIX--FEHBP + Tricare/Tricare for Life(don't have for Life part of question) + Medicare Parts "A" & "B". Looking forward to your assistance in my many choices to make
