Poll shows support for war in Afghanistan dropping sharply

Support for the war in Afghanistan has dropped sharply in recent months, The New York Times reports, based on the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. The drop in support is among both Democrats and Republicans.

Sixty-nine percent of those surveyed said that they thought the United States should not be at war in Afghanistan, up from 53 percent who said so four months ago. Nearly the same percentage -- 68 percent -- said the war is going either “somewhat badly” or “very badly,” compared with 42 percent in November, according to The Times. The poll was conducted among 986 adults between March 21-25.

Just 23 percent of respondents said that they believe the United States is doing the right thing by fighting in Afghanistan, which is the lowest percentage ever recorded in the New York Times/CBS News survey, according to CBS News.
