Death penalty trial for Sept. 11 suspects to restart

The death penalty trial for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other men accused of orchestrating the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, will restart in Guantanamo Bay, The Washington Post reported.

A senior Pentagon official approved the trial on Wednesday.

A military commission trial for the defendants began under the Bush administration but was halted by the Obama administration as part of its now-failed effort to close the detention center in Cuba. The Obama administration wanted to have the men stand trial in New York in federal court, but backed off those plans in 2011, amid congressional and public outcry.

The five men face multiple charges, including murder in violation of the law of war, attacking civilians, attacking civilian objects, hijacking aircraft and terrorism.
