Did the U.S. Just Accidentally Give Weapons to ISIS?

The U.S. military is trying to determine if an air-dropped bundle of weapons intended for Kurdish fighters in Syria is now in the hands of ISIS militants.

A video posted Tuesday to a YouTube account affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria appears to show militants with the weapons bundle, which included grenades and mortars.

"The analysts in Tampa and here in the Pentagon are examining that video right now…. We're still taking a look at it and assessing the validity of it," Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon's spokesman, told reporters.

Central Command has acknowledged that the military-aid drop went astray, but it said that it had destroyed the package with an airstrike to prevent it "from falling into enemy hands."

Asked if the bundle in the video could be the one the military claimed it had destroyed, Kirby could neither confirm nor deny. "I honestly don't know if that was one of the ones dropped and if the contents of it are in the hands of ISIL."

The bundle was one of 28 dropped into Syria to aid Kurdish fighters around Kobani. The aid was in addition to airstrikes against ISIS fighters near the Syrian border town.

Kirby defended the U.S. airdrops, saying they were helpful even if, hypothetically, this particularly cache had fallen into ISIS hands.

"It's one out of 28, so I think that's a pretty good record of success from the air," he said. "...We are very confident that the vast majority of the bundles went to the right hands."
