Shots Fired and 1 Killed After Vehicle Rams Gate at NSA Headquarters
Incident in Fort Meade, Md., is not believed to be related to terrorism.
One person was killed Monday morning and another injured after a vehicle tried to ram into a gate at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Md., according to news reports.
Details of the incident are still unfolding, but NSA police shot at two men in the vehicle, and one was killed, The Washington Post reported. Two officials told the Post that the men were dressed as women.
“The shooting scene is contained, and we do not believe it is related to terrorism,” the FBI’s Baltimore field office said in a statement. “We are investigating with NSA Police and other law enforcement agencies.”
The bureau is working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland to decide if federal charges are warranted, according to the statement.
President Obama has been briefed on the incident, “and will be updated as appropriate,” said White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz.
Fort Meade – located between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore -- houses about 11,000 military personnel and roughly 29,000 civilians, according to the installation’s website. NSA’s headquarters are there. Monday’s incident took place at a gate just off I-295 in Anne Arundel County, the FBI said.
