Child care could get more affordable

Child care services may become more accessible and affordable for federal employees next year, due to an amendment to the fiscal 1999 Treasury-Postal appropriations bill.

The amendment, introduced by Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., would allow agencies to use agency funds to provide child care services for federal employees. Agencies would be allowed to use the same funds to improve the affordability of child care for lower income federal employees who wish to use federal child care services.

The Senate has already approved Landrieu's legislation, but has yet to take up the entire Treasury-Postal bill. Rep. Connie Morella, R-Md., introduced similar legislation, which passed the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee in July and is now pending before the full House.

If the bill is enacted, the Office of Personnel Management and the General Services Administration would have 180 days to issue regulations necessary to carry out the amendment.
