Following their first face-to-face meeting since the House Republican Conference made Appropriations Chairman Bob Livingston, R-La., its speaker-designate, Livingston and Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., Wednesday pledged to "go forward more or less as partners working on a common agenda"-as the incoming speaker put it.
That agenda focuses on finishing Congress' annual budget work on time, and on issues such as education, Social Security reform, economic growth, job growth, tax cuts and creating a "fairer, simpler tax code."
Lott also said he and Livingston will meet Friday with "four to five" Republican governors to discuss "how to coordinate with them" the development and advancement of their shared agenda.
