Burning Question: Do troops deserve burgers and fries?
Commanders say war zones shouldn't be amusement parks.
Soldiers serving at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, are thousands of miles from home, but they do have a few creature comforts: Burger King, Pizza Hut, T.G.I. Fridays, and other eating establishments in the "Boardwalk" area of the base. But not for long.
Reuters reports that American military commanders have decided that providing "nonessential luxuries" such as fast food takes up too many resources, such as water and power. So the American eatieries are being phased out.
Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Hall put it this way in a blog post: "This is a war zone -- not an amusement park." That means other diversions, such as first-run movies, also are being scaled back.
