Shutting Down Lady Liberty, Again
Just when they get the Statue of Liberty open for business -- the observation deck in her crown only reopened last year after being closed to the public after 9/11 -- they shut her down again.
Reuters reports that Lady Liberty will be closed to implement security upgrades starting about a year from now. The multi-million-dollar project will add fire-proof staircases, elevators and exits, according to David Luchsinger, superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.
During the year-long project, tourists will be able to visit the park surrounding the statue, but not its base, pedestal or crown.
