Opposing Views on Openness in Government
In a memo to agencies late last year, President Obama had this to say:
My administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in government. We will work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation, and collaboration. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in government.
Perhaps not surprisingly, House Republicans aren't buying this rhetoric. In fact, they see it in exactly the opposite way. According to an Associated Press report, the GOPers' "Pledge to America," slated to be unveiled today, includes the following passage:
Regarding the policies of the current government, the governed do not consent. An arrogant and out-of-touch government of self-appointed elites makes decisions, issues mandates and enacts laws without accepting or requesting the input of the many.
