Honoring Government's Best
Given the beating that federal employees have taken in the press and the political sphere lately, it might be a more opportune time than ever to step back and recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the government's best and brightest.
The Partnership for Public Service tries to do exactly that in the Service to America Medals program. The annual awards recognize outstanding civil servants across a range of categories, including homeland security, citizen services, and national security and international affairs. Awards are also presented for career achievement and to an overall federal employee of the year.
I was around when Government Executive and the Partnership launched the Sammies program several years ago, and I can attest that the awards truly shine a light on some of the most impressive people working for the federal government.
The 2011 awards process is underway, culminating in an awards gala on Oct. 5. The Partnership is accepting nominations until Jan. 31. So if you know a deserving candidate, now's the time to get cracking on getting him or her some recognition for their work.
