Pearl Harbor Survivors Association to Disband

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and it will also be the last official anniversary its survivors will share together.

The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association will disband on Dec. 31, due to the declining health of its remaining members. Today's anniversary will mark their last formal meeting, according to a press release issued by the Veterans Affairs Department.

"The association's motto is 'Remember Pearl Harbor -- Keep America Alert,' and they have done so over the years," Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki said in the release.

Only 2,700 members remain, and they are all in their late 80s or older, according to CNN. There were 84,000 Americans on the Pearl Harbor naval base on Dec. 7, 1941, and 2,400 were killed in the attack, most of them members of the military.
