Where the White House Lets the Sunshine In

Officials openly promote open government.

Using a headline straight out of the rock musical “Hair,” two top White House officials embarked on the news industry-sponsored Sunshine Week on Monday with a recap of the Obama administration’s projects promoting open government.

In a blog titled “Let the Sunshine In,” Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs administrator Cass Sunstein and Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Government Innovation Chris Vein compiled a one-stop shopping site for Team Obama’s transparency-related initiatives.

It’s all there -- from regulations.gov, to the campaign to improve records management, to “smart disclosure” sites that help consumers track their energy or benefits data, to the “We the People” petition tool, to the public resources anti-corruption program called Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, to old standbys such as innovation, foreign assistance and the Freedom of Information Act.
