IRS headquarters to reopen Friday
Building in downtown Washington was evacuated Wednesday morning because of smoke from an electrical fire.
Internal Revenue Service employees stationed at the agency's downtown Washington headquarters will be able to return to the office Friday.
An electrical fire sent everyone home Wednesday morning.
All repairs are complete, the building's systems are functioning and the agency's maintenance crew is finishing preparations for the 3,000-plus employees to return, a spokeswoman said.
The headquarters, at 1111 Constitution Ave. NW, was evacuated at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday because of an electrical fire in the basement. After employees retrieved their personal belongings and shut down their computers, they were told to go home.
No injuries were reported. The building remained closed while its electrical system was repaired and the air conditioning and heating system was turned back on.
