Pipe bomb attack on Treasury IG’s home under investigation

Law enforcement officials are investigating a pipe bomb explosion at the home of Eric Thorson, the Treasury Department’s inspector general, according to Bloomberg News.

Officers from the Fairfax County Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the attack on Thorson’s home in the early morning of Dec. 31. According to the Associated Press, the attack occurred between midnight and 12:30 a.m. when a pipe bomb placed in a mailbox at Thorson’s Washington-area house detonated.

Though investigators are trying to determine if the attack was linked to Thorson’s work at Treasury, Richard Delmar, the counsel to the inspector general, told AP that they had no reason to believe it was.

Thorson has been the Treasury’s inspector general since 2008.
