Play of the Day: Obama's Taking Away Our High (War) Horse
The White House needs to do a better job of reassuring Americans negotiating the fog of war.
The Grammys were held Sunday night on CBS, which gave The Late Show's David Letterman to connect government to the awards show. Joking about the Pope's upcoming fall visit to Congress, Letterman insinuated that all speeches must be approved by Kanye West, while his producers put together a Medicare coverage message for Madonna.
Letterman also touched on Angela Merkel's latest visit to Washington, only to comment that her job probably isn't the most difficult in Europe. Late Night's Seth Meyers joked about another famous Teutonic person, touching on a certain former California governor's recent comments on climate change.
On Comedy Central, The Daily Show brought on Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef to talk about American influence in the Middle East. Youssef laid out the reasons the U.S. is involved in the region (hint: It's also called "black gold"). The Nightly Show was devoted to the way Americans view war, with host Larry Wilmore complaining that President Barack Obama's comments haven't done a good job getting Americans entirely on board for the fight against the Islamic State. Check out Wilmore's FDR impression at 2:45 to really get the idea.
