Play of the Day: Taking Down the Confederate Battle Flag
Late-night hosts put the flag's history in context.
In an episode posted Monday, Barack Obama used the n-word on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. This gave a lot of people fits, causing The Nightly Show's Larry Wilmore to devote a segment to the history of the word's use by previous (white) American presidents. Conan O'Brien and Late Night's Seth Meyers also joked about the issue, albeit in a lighter fashion Monday.
In the wake of the last week's shooting in South Carolina and the news that Governor Nikki Haley has asked for reexamination of the Confederate flag, late-night television hosts took Monday to comment. Meyers, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart and Wilmore all took on the issue, with the hosts pointing out that the history of the flag lies not in heritage only, but also as a symbol of armed insurrection against the United States of America, while joking about Southern culture.
