Play of the Day: Giving Equal Time to 2016 Candidates
Stephen Colbert has figured out loopholes in the rule.
Last Week Tonight dedicated its main segment Sunday night to getting rid of the penny, a coin that costs more to make than its face value. In citing a GAO report about pennies lack of circulation, Oliver joked about the penny's usefulness, comparing the penny to the recent Muppets TV reboot: It just hangs around for no reason.
Late Show's Stephen Colbert joked over the weekend about the laws regarding equal time for candidates in the wake of Donald Trump's recent hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live. The Late Show's lawyers found that a candidate's likeness would need to be on screen for the equal time rules to be invoked, so Colbert had several symbols for the candidates. Trump is a fire hydrant, Bernie Sanders is Gargamel and Colbert's symbol for Jeb Bush's campaign might make the most sense of all of them.
