Play of the Day: A Sit-in on the Hill
Democrats sat on their butts… in the hopes of getting something done.
Democrats spent more than 24 hours sitting on the House floor as part of a protest to get the Republican House majority to hold votes on gun-control measures. Late-night hosts joked about the protest, with Late Show's Stephen Colbert, Late Night's Seth Meyers and The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon joking about Congress' inactivity and the laziness of sitting.
Because the House leadership controls C-SPAN, the cameras were shuttered during the sit-in and late-night joked about the Democrats turning to streaming app Periscope to broadcast the protest. The Daily Show's Trevor Noah joked about the May-December notion of C-SPAN and a mobile app, while Conan O'Brien joked about the huge streaming numbers it got.
Republican Speaker Paul Ryan called the sit-in a "publicity stunt" that disrupted the House's normal business. Noah joked about the very nature of publicity stunts as political theater, while Meyers joked about the House's actual upcoming business. After all, no one remembers what their local post office's name is.
