Play of the Day: Mike Pence's Fake Ancient Russian Proverbs
The bear hibernation one isn't the only ancient piece of wisdom the Indiana governor made up.
Many pundits agreed that Mike Pence bested Tim Kaine in Tuesday's vice presidential debate, largely because Kaine interrupted Pence over 70 times during the 90-minute event. Conan O'Brien joked that the debate technically qualified them as a married couple, while The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon joked that Kaine resembled Pence's running mate's debate performance last week. In comparing Pence to Donald Trump, Full Frontal's Samantha Bee noted that Pence's calm, cool performance was like talking about the airbags on a burning car.
Buzzfeed discovered that the Russian proverb Pence quoted -- "the Russian bear never dies, it just hibernates" -- appears to be made up. Late Show's Stephen Colbert joked that Pence's move reminded him of Melania Trump quoting the ancient Michelle Obama proverb. Colbert also had some more of Pence's fake proverbs touching on Pence's relationship with the Indiana LGBT community and even one that mocked Trump's reported frustration with Pence's debate performance.
