Play of the Day: Trump and Comey Had a Dinner Date at the White House
The former FBI chief and the president broke bread, talked about loyalty and stared at one another in silence.
President Donald Trump announced Christopher Wray was his pick for FBI director on Twitter Wednesday morning. Wray, a New Jersey attorney and former Bush administration official, helped defend Chris Christie during the Bridgegate scandal, prompting The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon to make fun of Christie's weight. Late Night's Seth Meyers also joked that Trump is just toying with Christie by not giving him the job.
Fired FBI Director James Comey asked the Senate Intelligence Committee to release his opening testimony ahead of his Thursday hearing and it contains some ripe material for late-night hosts. Comey wrote that Trump said "he had not been involved with hookers in Russia," prompting Jimmy Kimmel to note that Bill Clinton probably finds this hilarious. The infamous meeting in which Trump asked Comey for loyalty was subject to many jokes Wednesday night, particularly the portion of testimony where Comey wrote that he and Trump had an awkward one-on-one dinner in which Trump asked for loyalty and Comey wrote "I didn’t move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed." The Daily Show's Trevor Noah joked that Comey treated Trump like a bear in the woods, while The Late Show's Stephen Colbert noted that this was a strategy to avoid getting eaten by a Tyrannosaurus rex in the original Jurassic Park. Meyers joked that the silence was like a bad Tinder date and Noah joked that Comey was clearly discomforted by the silence, yet the president just thought they were going to kiss.
