GAO, union reach first collective bargaining agreement
Negotiations cover 2,000 agency employees for at least four years.
Government Accountability Office employees soon will be covered by a new collective bargaining agreement, the first since workers elected union representation in 2007.
GAO employees voted to join the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers in the wake of major personnel changes that began in 2005. IFPTE Local 1921 represents about 2,000 agency analysts and specialists.
"This is an excellent agreement that demonstrates that employees are valued and now have a seat at the table in a meaningful way," said Ronald La Due Lake, president of the local. "This contract emphasizes a commitment to work-life balance, diversity and flexibilities in the workplace while honoring the agency's important work."
The pact -- the result of 10 months of negotiation -- covers employment conditions for at least four years and will take effect once union members ratify it and agency officials approve it.
"Achievement of such an agreement in such a relatively short amount of time is testament to the commitment of GAO and the union to the mission of the agency and well-being of employees," GAO Acting Comptroller General Gene Dodaro said. "It also demonstrates the constructive relationship both sides have worked hard to develop."
