Lawmakers have until Friday to figure out funding for federal agencies that have yet to receive full-year appropriations, or there will be a partial government shutdown.
The shutdown would affect roughly 850,000 federal employees working at unfunded agencies, and about 345,000 of them would be furloughed, according to a Government Executive analysis of agencies' latest shutdown plans. The timing of the potential shutdown also brings unique challenges, as it could extend over the holidays when many employees were likely already scheduled to take time off.
