Government Technology Leadership Awards

Sponsored by Government Executive

To: Senior Government Officials

From: Dennis Fischer, Commissioner, Federal Technology Service, GSA
Timothy B. Clark, Editor and Publisher, Government Executive

We think you would agree that too little recognition and praise is given to successful government initiatives. We are working to correct that problem and hope that you might help.

As you know, there are many successes to celebrate. Many of them lie below the level of public consciousness, but are nonetheless vital to the efficient functioning of important public enterprises. And many involve the creative use of modern computer and telecommunications technology to keep up with rising workloads and satisfy rising customer expectations.

For the past six years, the Government Technology Leadership Awards program has celebrated such successes. By honoring meritorious projects, and the teams responsible for them, the awards have sought to encourage innovation. More than 120 teams have been recognized so far. Last year, a panel of federal experts reviewed more than 150 nominations and chose 20 winners-who were honored at a special reception in Washington. The winning projects were described in the December issue of Government Executive, and were posted on the World Wide Web for the benefit of others who might learn from these examples of excellence. The article covering last year's winners can be found at www.govexec.com/tech/articles/1297tech.htm.

We need your help in identifying worthy candidates for the 1998 awards. If you know of a government information-technology project that deserves recognition, please complete the attached nomination form and return it no later than June 19, 1998. The awards salute projects large and small that have directly aided in the missions of their organizations by boosting efficiency and effectiveness, lowering costs, and/or improving service to the public, through original uses of technology.

The nomination form is also available electronically. You may print it out, download it into your word processor or complete it on line. Nomination forms may be submitted electronically, by mail, or by telefax to the numbers and addresses listed below.

A final note: This year, the judges have created a special category of awards for projects that show creativity in addressing the Year 2000 problem. Other agencies may benefit from your innovations in this crucial field of work, so please let us know of any promising projects in your agency.
