Clinton to Approve DoD Raise

The Senate Tuesday on a 73-26 vote approved the $265.6 billion FY97 Defense authorization bill conference report. The measure includes a 3 percent military pay raise, which the Clinton administration has suggested is a key reason the president will sign it, despite reservations about its overall spending level.

The House approved the measure Aug. 1. The Senate Tuesday agreed to attach to the Defense authorization bill anti-stalking legislation, sponsored by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, that would make it a federal crime to cross state lines to harass or threaten someone.
