A Hoover Two-Fer

The week that will bring the release of the Clint Eastwood-directed biopic of legendary FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover also has dealt a blow to the durability of the Pennsylvania Avenue building that bears his name.

The Government Accountability Office on Tuesday published a report noting that the 36-year-old structure is deteriorating and that a doubling of FBI staff over the past decade has made providing security for scattered employees a tall order.

The report, which includes comments from officials at the FBI, the General Services Administration and the Homeland Security Department, examines alternatives such as modernizing the current building, rebuilding it on the same site and rebuilding at a new site.

Any major change in use of the building might provide longtime critics of the long-controversial Hoover a window to lobby for changing its name.
